Each image presents a unique personal experience that provides a sense of place and keepsake in the form of a picture postcard from a place that has come to feel like home to her. Suzanne Metzel’s series, “Still Life,” is a collection of photopolymer gravure prints of natural subjects. With the help of UV light, these images have been transferred to steel-backed plates which are then inked and printed by hand with an etching press.

About Kambua Chema: Postcards from Morocco

Kambua Chema’s collection of images, Postcards of Morocco, are a snapshot of moments throughout Morocco printed on Hahnemühle paper. Each image presents a unique personal experience that provides a sense of place and keepsake in the form of a picture postcard from a place that has come to feel like home to her.

Suzanne Metzel’s series, Still Life, is a collection of photopolymer gravure prints of natural subjects. With the help of UV light, these images have been transferred to steel-backed plates which are then inked and printed by hand with an etching press. The technique is the perfect vehicle to reveal nature’s inherent beauty.

The exhibit opens on Thursday, June 2 with a public reception on Saturday, June 4 from 5-7 p.m.  Chema and Metzel will give an artist talk on June 16. The show closes June 26.

About Suzanne Metzel: Still Life

In recent years digital photography has significantly changed how we make images. Though I am deeply grateful for the many conveniences of Photoshop and my digital camera, I still yearn for both the hands-on experience of making art and the magic of the reveal. With the help of a UV exposure unit I transfer images to a photopolymer steel backed plate, process the plate in water and then ink and print the images using an etching press. In the darkroom the magic occurs as the image slowly appears in the developer. For printmakers, it is the moment one pulls the print away from the plate. The process is slow, laborious, and hands on.
Anxious to once again retreat into my basement printmaking studio I chose to revisit an old subject, still life of natural subjects. The images in this series are “portraits” of some of my favorite things and the photopolymer gravure technique is a perfect compliment to their natural beauty.
