Press and Clay is an exhibition of fine prints and clay sculpture by Vida Sačić. The exhibition brings together Sačić’s recent work that explores themes of immigration and displacement.
As a printmaker, Sačić works with a letterpress printing press. This now obsolete technology has been used for centuries to print multiples of any language-based documents. Sačić subverts the originally usage of the press to create charged compositions in the spirit of abstract expressionism and Balkan modernism. The work is printed in small editions between 5 to 15 each. Many prints feature language fragments, narratives that question words as a vehicle for meaning.
As an immigrant, Sačić is constantly searching for stories of origin and belonging. This is particularly evident in her small sculptures with titles such as “We Were / Kids of Immigrants” and “We Sailed Over.” The small sculptural objects are paired with printing tools to create mysterious scenes referencing both the human and the machine. The effect stands out-of-time and creates an enticing visual riddle for the viewer.
Vida Sačić (Croatian and American, b.1980) is a Chicago-based artist, designer and educator. She earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from Indiana University Bloomington in 2010. Her work in print media explores the relationship between printing and language. She prints and creates large-scale installations; assemblages of prints on paper, textiles and fiber using movable type, letters that can be touched, and a printing press. As Jonathan Goodman noted in The Brooklyn Rail, she composes” highly advanced abstract composition(s), whose unusual beauty takes place because of Sačić’s innate sense of balance and strong accumulations of form.” Her works have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions nationwide, including DeVos Art Museum (MI), Art Mora Gallery (New York City), Columbia College (Chicago) and The Center for Book Arts (New York City). Sačić has been recognized as an Artist-in-Residence at The Penland School of Art and Craft, The Hamilton Wood Type & Printing Museum and The Center for Book and Paper Arts in Chicago among others. She is an Associate Professor of Art at Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago.
