Nov 14th 2021

We’re very happy to announce the opening of our current exhibitions. Guzzo Pinc, Fantasia and Allison Wade, Cosmic Fishing, two solo shows have been magically blended to create a lively mix of rigorous energy. The shows open on Sunday, November 14th from 3 – 6pm and will continue until December 30th, 2021.

There is some beautiful overlapping in the work of these two great artists, but as object and image makers, they remain resolutely focused on their own programs. Although we see a delightful sense of exuberance and play from Allison and Guzzo, the tonal qualities of each have distinct variances. The work of these artists transmits emphatically, but never remains too cheery. While curating and placing the work, we thought about proximity, orientation and overlay as tools to calibrate the energy and within the conversations between works. The results are something both refined and explosive; a combination that serves both artists and their audience quite well.

Cosmic Fishing is Chicago artist Allison Wade’s fourth solo show with Devening Projects; as the title suggests, this is a project that takes humor and sincerity to new levels. Like the Buckminster Fuller quote about intuition from which her show title originates, this playful, knotty and spatially alive collection of new sculptures and wall works gives her audience another thrilling opportunity to get closer to the heart of her thinking and her production.

As Allison works, she carefully regulates a variety of materials, shapes, surfaces and assembly and presentation strategies to strike a delicate balance between clumsy awkwardness and a tuneful balance. The goal is tension; straining the lightness of the work with heft and wobble leads it to a precarious point of potential undoing. This wavering might suggest a skilled juggling act; what it also does so beautifully is to set a course for a gripping experience. The reverberations felt between so many carefully considered decisions, makes an encounter with Allison Wade’s work both poetic and thrilling.

Allison Wade earned a BA in English literature from Stanford University and an MFA in fiber and material studies from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Wade’s work has been exhibited at Hagiwara Projects, Tokyo, Japan; Scotty Enterprises, Berlin, Germany; the John Michael Kohler Art Center, Sheboygan, Wisconsin; Hyde Park Art Center, Chicago; Ditch Projects, Eugene, Oregon; Chicago Cultural Center; Riverside Arts Center, Riverside, Illinois; Nebraska Wesleyan University, Lincoln, Nebraska; Loyola University Chicago; and Weston Art Gallery, Cincinnati. She is a lecturer in the Department of Art Theory and Practice at Northwestern University and is represented by Devening Projects, Chicago. She lives and works in Chicago.
