INTRUCTOR: Annie Zidek
Back by popular demand, LATITUDE will be running Graphic Poetry with Annie Zidek for the second time this November!
What’s the relationship between poetry and photography? How do words guide visual organization, and how do images guide writing? Let’s talk about it! Join Annie Zidek for Graphic Poetry, a two session virtual workshop exploring the relationship between photographs and language with magazines, poetry, and other paper materials. Materials for making will be mailed to participants 2 weeks before the start of the workshop, so grab your spot early!
In this workshop, participants will examine ways they can use poetry to organize space and images to create word associations through collage and close reading activities. The class will discuss the function of source materials and ways they enhance and detract from visual work and begin making their own graphic poetry during the first session. By looking at examples of graphic poetry and writers like Diana Khoi Nguyen and Claudia Rankine, the group will explore how colors, shapes, and words perform together on the page. In the second meeting, participants will come back together to talk about each other’s graphic poetry and discuss the decisions they made in creating their work. Participants can expect to explore themes of fragmentation, connection, and language both written and visual.
This class is open to students of all levels and is designed for anyone who wants to challenge their understanding of poetry through visual collages, readings, and group feedback. There will only be 10 spots available in this workshop, so don’t wait to sign up!
