Opening Wednesday, August 12th, from 11AM - 12:30PM

RE•ABANDONED PRACTICES 2020
School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Lumpen Radio
in partnership with Public Media Institute

Eighteen participants of the three-week summer course devoted to abandoned practices and endangered uses have been engaged in research, performance, installation, and writing projects, remotely with teachers Matthew Goulish, Lin Hixson, and Mark Jeffery, with teaching assistant Sami Ismat, and with the technological facilitation of Maryam Faridani. This year’s visiting scholars were Jorge Lucero, Kélina Gotman and Chicago-based curator Cortney Lederer.

You are invited to attend the live presentations on Wednesday, August 12th 2020 @ 11AM CST, through twitch.tv/lumpenradio, devised in response to the form of the Chautauqua Assembly, a traveling rural adult education institution, the popularity of which peaked in the late 1800s. Sharing the theme of useful knowledge, the three 19 minute presentations each weave a series of strictly timed original responses to subjects such as “Victorian London Map Glove,” “Coal Mine Canary” and “Boustrophedon” in alternating presentational modes of expert demonstration, traveling exhibition, entertainment performance, bilingual show-and-tell, ecstatic dance in confinement, and catch a falling monument.
