Please join us for WMG’s Literary event “Truth, Distortion and Alternative Facts” on Sunday, November 10, 2019, from 2 to 4 p.m. Curated by Nina Corwin, poets Gisella Faggi, Jen Finstrom, Stephanie Friedman, Jae Green and Christine Rhein will share their work exploring the theme.
“Is it truth or is it lie? Reasons or excuses? Can you tell the difference? If you paint over a blood stain, what do you get? Sleight of hand. Optical illusion. As Groucho Marx would say, “who are you going to believe: me or your own eyes?”
Opinions are not facts, but from social media to the highest seats of power, we are barraged with wild assertions, false advertising and propaganda. We cling to our beliefs regardless of evidence. We view the objective world through the lens of our particular distortions, can’t see the forest for the trees.
Where, then, does truth reside? We look to data, scientific evidence, mathematical proof. But does it stand up to scrutiny? The unique properties of poetry sanction such juxtapositions that allow the poet to make claims, to lie and invite the reader to believe it or not.”
