This event is part of the Time Salon series. The Time Salon is a facilitated gathering offered by The Kola Nut Collaborative which guides participants through dialogue and practice in communal asset mapping, social economy, and non-monetary exchange. In this intentional space, we challenge the idea that participation in a framework of economic exchange necessitates the use of the dollar as currency.

Theme: Between Resistance & Resilience – Lessons from Puerto Rico’s Mutual Aid Centers

In 2017, Puerto Rico was struck a tremendous blow when Hurricane Maria made landfall devastating the physical infrastructure of a country already reeling from a financial crisis. In the wake of these combined crises, they were subject to the residual impact of the phenomenon Naomi Klein describes as “disaster capitalism”. Following several incomplete response efforts by local government, US public and private sector agencies, residents took matters into their own hands with the formation of several Centros de Apoyo Mutuos (Mutual Aid Centers). These centers have charged themselves with meeting the basic needs of local communities, providing visible supportive infrastructure, and coordinating assistance from international partners.
