Join us at the Currency Exchange Café for a special First Monday Jazz event featuring M + N.

M + N is a collaboration between Peabody Award winner Nikki Patin and Grammy winner Marta Cook, featuring Patin’s powerhouse vocals and poetic lyrics and Cook’s intricate harp arrangements. M + N has performed at the Black Artists Retreat, Uncommon Ground, Beastwomen and the Chicago Art Department.


ABOUT NIKKI PATIN

Featured in The Guardian, Chicago Tribune, HBO’s Def Poetry Jam and on international television and radio, Peabody Award-winning poet Nikki Patin has been writing, performing and educating for almost 15 years. She has taught hundreds of workshops on spoken word, body image and interpersonal violence. in 2014, she made history when she addressed the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland on behalf of Black women survivors of sexual violence in the U.S. Nikki Patin holds an MFA in Creative Non-Fiction from the University of Southern Maine. Recently, she was honored with a 3Arts Make A Wave award. Her work can be found at www.nikkipatin.com.


ABOUT MARTA COOK

Marta Cook has traveled extensively as a musician, performing and teaching throughout Europe and North America. Highlights include the World Harp Congress (Vancouver,) Spoleto Festival USA (Charleston), and Espace Culturel Bertin Poirée (Paris.) Having worked as a studio musician in Chicago and New York, her playing has featured on many albums; she is considered a GRAMMY® winner by the Recording Academy for her contribution to Yo-Yo Ma’s 2010 release Songs of Joy and Peace. As a composer, Marta’s commissioned pieces include music for choreographer Elena Demyanenko’s Raw Nerves at New York Live Arts; Looped, a 30-minute solo dance theatre piece for the Somerset Harp Festival; and Resonnance; a dance film score for the Festival International de Vidéo Danse de Bourgogne, L’Arc Scène Nationale, Le Creusot, France.


First Monday Jazz showcases Chicago artists the first Monday of every month. Join friends and neighbors on the UChicago Arts Block for an enlivening evening of music from some of Chicago’s most exciting artists. Presented by Arts and Public Life in partnership with the Currency Exchange Café.
