WE Series presents Kate Barutha, Daniel Dehaan, Deidre Huckabay, and Ryan Ingebritsen, all in absentia.

There is absolutely nothing lonelier. Again, not really sure. Drones drift into the atmosphere, settling a hundred years later on the surface of one of Saturn’s moons. That is how every day starts. For no one. Especially for you. You may advance a slide. Not advance a slide. Join no one in being there. Beep beep beep.

Kate Barutha is the Arts Engagement Manager at the University of Chicago. Among myriad roles, she oversees jazz and experimental-music programming at the Logan Center for the Arts and coordinates exhibitions, performances, and artists’ residencies there. She has produced a wide range of multidisciplinary initiatives in Chicago and beyond, focusing on building partnerships among community agencies, cultural institutions, and local artists. Kate received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interdisciplinary Sculpture from the Maryland Institute College of Art and continues a Fiber Arts practice in her home studio in Pilsen. A cello, flute, and bass player, Kate is a member of newly formed Chicago synth-pop band Skip Trace and has performed and recorded with experimental musician Adam Lempel and Baltimore synth-pop darlings Future Islands, among others.

Daniel Dehaan is a composer, performer, and educator currently based in Chicago. He is a doctoral student at Northwestern University studying music composition with a focus on digital music creation and performance. His principal composition teachers have included Jay Alan Yim, Hans Thomalla, Chris Mercer, and Marcos Balter. Dehaan regularly creates and performs music designed to be site and system specific, crafting unique experiences for each performance. His works emphasize the physical presence of the audience and utilize specially designed multi-channel speaker installations to envelop his audiences in the sonic experience.

Deidre Huckabay is a Chicago-based performer, writer, photographer, and event producer. She is a flutist with degrees from the Eastman School of Music and Duquesne University. Her work reflects a solitary, interior world, drawing on a musical life that requires long hours alone listening. As a flutist, Deidre has played Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center, and extensively toured the U.S., Europe, and Latin America. Deidre performs with Manual Cinema and the Eastman BroadBand, and has recorded for Urtext and Bridge Records. She is co-owner of the experimental cassette tape label Parlour Tapes+ and a regular contributor to the online new music magazine Cacophony. She is a member of the Chicago-based performance group Mocrep, co-curator of the WE Series at Elastic Arts, and founder of Spiderf*rt Press.

Ryan Ingebritsen is a composer, sound designer, sound artist, electronic musician, and sound engineer whose artistic activities spill over from one world to another. Through all of his artistic activities, he collaborates with musicians, dancers and live performers, and spaces to create interactive and site specific solutions that enhance expressive possibilities of utilizing spaces and sound systems as instruments in an ensemble. Ingebritsen has distinguished himself as an artistic partner and become an integral part of the new music scene in Chicago working with a myriad of groups such as eighth blackbird, International Contemporary Ensemble, Third Coast Percussion, and choreographers such as Erica Mott, Ginger Farley, and Sarah Shelton-Mann. His work has taken him to Europe, Asia, and Australia and he has worked and had his work presented in premier venues throughout the US such as the Park Avenue Armory in New York and the J Pritzker Pavilion in Chicago.
