Joey Garfield is a filmmaker, photographer and multi-disciplinary artist. His work focuses on rhythm, flow, simplicity, attitude and humor. He honors and documents the counter cultures of his youth, which saved his life creatively and soulfully. Repurposed wood, spray paint, earth, found objects and album vinyl are some of the tools of his trade.

His current show at 1100 Florence Gallery, Mound Town, includes 2D/3D works of photography, sculpture and mixed media. The project consists of a series of photographs of Mounds. These photographs profile different mounds, which are found in their natural outdoor environment. All mounds in the series are rare and unique characters captured in a fleeting moment of their existence because no mound is permanent. They are all made naturally from dirt, snow, wood chips, and the pile ups of stuff that we see in the corners of our world everyday.

Bio – An Evanston native who also calls New York City home. Joey has participated in the Lower East Side art scene from the early 90s on to the present. He is a founding member of the Tokyo/New York art collective The Barnstormers.

His work has been exhibited at Joshua Liner gallery in NYC, Smack Mellon gallery, Swoons Miss Rockaway Armada benefit show and “By The People For The People” curated by Maya Hayuk. His work has also toured internationally with the Beautiful Losers: Contemporary Art and Street Culture exhibit that kicked off at the Contemporary Art Center in Cincinnati OH in 2004. He has collaborated on a film series entitled The Run Up for San Francisco based art gallery Upper Playground/ Fifty24SF and is a frequent film collaborator with artist Steve ESPO Powers as well as Chicago contemporary artist Carlos DZINE Rolon. His music video for RJD2 “Work It Out” is part of Spectacle: The Music Video at the Museum of Moving Image and is touring with that exhibit worldwide.

Joey continues to work as photographer and editor-at-large for Juxtapoz Arts and Culture magazine. One issue of note is his curated and compiled June 2013 issue dedicated to his friend Adam entitled, The Beastie Boys: A Visual Album Cover History & Tribute to friend Adam MCA Yauch. His photos and words have appeared in the magazines Heeb, Stop Smiling, and the zine Grand Royal.

Locally he’s shown at Silo Gallery in a solo show called The Sound Of Never, Longman & Eagle’s Snug gallery, Logan Hardware Record Store and at Co- Prosperity Sphere in Pilsen.
