Platform is pleased to present a two-person exhibition with Karen Connell and Jeroen Nelemans titled Window Wonders. The name Window Wonders is in reference to Cabinets of Curiosities, or the Wunderkammer (Wonder Room). This exhibition continues the dialogue with the history of Cabinets of Curiosities. Precursors of the modern museum these archived collections served to transform the mundane into a place for inspiration and creative thought. Both Connell and Nelemans bring forward their own curiosities: magical constructions and relics that feel “otherworldly”.

The light box series of Nelemans references the material component of the LCD screen.

The liquid crystals that are inside of each computer monitor fluctuates between solid and liquid states. These light boxes mimic this experience by using two acrylic strip surfaces that are placed 1 inch apart. The viewer’s angle changes the color as well as the illusion of space, which morphs and transforms according to the viewer’s movement.

Connell’s images, from the series, After Fireworks, are photographs of constructed dioramas. Using fiber optics, laser cutting, 3-D props, and drawn backdrops. Connell evokes a sense magic and nostalgia, frozen in a moment of time. The scenes are sourced from individuals’ Flickr streams. Connell strives to emphasize the individual’s experience, hopes, memories and interiority during a mass spectacle, as opposed to solely creating a fictitious world. These images feel like the substance of experience, not just representation.
