Eija-Liisa Ahtila is a contemporary visual artist and filmmaker who experiments with narrative storytelling in her films and cinematic installations. Her earlier works dealt with unsettling human dramas at the center of personal relationships such as teenage sexuality, family relations, mental disintegration, and death. Her recent work tackles more profound and basic artistic questions where she investigates the processes of perception and attribution of meaning—at times through a cultural and existential thematic, like colonialism, faith, and post-humanism. Her installations and films combine an air of contemporary familiarity with intense oddness, giving Ahtila’s work its distinctive style. Her skillfully crafted narratives and touching portrayals of characters have won critical acclaim worldwide, showing in some of the most prominent contemporary art museums around the globe. Her films have won several international film awards and retrospectives of her films have been shown at major festivals throughout the world. The British Film Institute has published The Cinematic Works of Eija-Liisa Ahtila, exposing her work to a wider audience.
