Chris Ware (SAIC 1991–93) is an award-winning cartoonist and author whose work tries to tell unpretentious stories about what it feels like to be alive via the generally approachable yet surprisingly complicated medium of the American comic strip. He is the author of Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth, which was included on Amazon’s “100 Books to Read in a Lifetime” list in 2014. His most recent graphic novel, Building Stories, was deemed a Top Ten Fiction Book by the New York Times and Time magazine and chosen as the Best Book of the Year by Publisher’s Weekly. His work has been exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.

Chris Ware will discuss his work with Hamza Walker who is currently co-curating the Los Angeles Biennial Made In L.A. 2016 at the Hammer Museum. He is currently on two-year leave from the Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago where, since 1994, he served as Director of Education and Associate Curator. Recent exhibitions include Teen Paranormal Romance (2014), Suicide Narcissus (2013), and John Neff (2013). He was the recipient of the 1999 Norton Curatorial Grant and the 2004 Walter Hopps Award for Curatorial Achievement. In 2010 he was awarded the Ordway Prize for contributions to the field in the form of writing and exhibitions. Walker has contributed reviews and art criticism to New Art Examiner, Art Muscle, Dialogue, Parkett, and Artforum in addition to numerous catalogue essays on artists ranging from Heimo Zobering to Raymond Pettibon.
