Loo Presents: We

@ Slow

2153 W. 21st St., Chicago Il

Opening Saturday, April 25th, from 6PM - 8PM

On view through Saturday, May 16th

Curated by Jason Dunda, We gathers three diverse artists in an attempt to break the seal on another outstanding Loo exhibition. While each is a whiz at their respective mediums, these three diverse makers often cross streams in their approaches. Martha Clippinger and Allison Wade share a gestural immediacy in process; Guy Richards Smit’s irreverent images eloquently answer the call of Clippinger and Wade’s playful use of materials.

While small in stature, the works when gathered are certain to make a splash. It’s not a competition, but they’re all number one.

Martha Clippinger’s work inhabits the fertile area between painting and sculpture. She calls attention to color, the physical qualities of her materials, and to the architectural spaces in which her work is installed. Born in Columbus, GA, Clippinger received a BA from Fordham University and an MFA from Mason Gross School of Art, Rutgers University and has been a fellow at the MacDowell Colony, Edward F. Albee Foundation, and the Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation. She has been the recipient of numerous grants and awards, including the 2014 American Academy of Arts and Letters Purchase Award and a 2013 Fulbright Research Grant, completed in Oaxaca, Mexico. Clippinger’s work has been featured in The Brooklyn Rail, Hyperallergic, and The Huffington Post. She has had numerous solo and group exhibitions in the U.S. and internationally and is represented by Elizabeth Harris Gallery in New York. http://www.marthaclippinger.com/

Born and raised in New York City, Guy Richards Smit is a video artist, performer, musician and painter whose work has been seen at biennials in Havana and Valencia and at ARCOMadrid in 2008 and Dublin Contemporary in 2011. Solo exhibitions include Grossmalerman! Schroeder Romero & Shredder, New York, USA 2011; Fred [London] Ltd., London, UK 2009; Nausea 2, Premier Series, Museum of Modern Art, New York, USA 2004; QED, Los Angeles, CA in 2006.
