This event will take place at the Chicago Room & Board showroom. Artist Jordan Martins will bring in a selection of his work to display and speak about his current practice. Wine and snacks will be provided. This Chartwell Collectors Circle event is sponsored by Room & Board.
Artist Statement: I have for a long time identified as a collage artist. Much of my work in fact engages with the genre’s basic, literal elements–gluing fragments of paper onto a surface–but my ongoing interest stems more from the more abstract concepts that can be extrapolated from these elements: the ruptures that occur when something is removed from its context; the reactions that arise when it is grafted onto another system; how the “edges” of these interactions engender different results if they are smoothly cut or jaggedly torn, seamlessly integrated or bluntly repelling each other. I’m curious what happens when fragments from diverse origins collide haphazardly in one mass, or how a single visual language or sign system can be deconstructed or folded in on itself to dislodge unknown meanings or resonances.
Jordan Martins is a Chicago-based visual artist whose work employs collage techniques to explore notions of multiplicity, hybridity and visual codes. He received his MFA in visual arts from the Universidade Federal da Bahia in Salvador, Brazil in 2007, and is now based in Chicago, where he teaches at North Park University. Since 2012 he has been the program director at Comfort Station, a multidisciplinary art space in Logan Square, Chicago.
