Vincent Tiley’s sculptures and performances investigate desire as a transformative force within and on the body. Desire can turn a person into an object and creates new bodies by attaching us to other bodies objects and architectures. Skin is a barrier, a site for the gaze, and a membrane for receiving and sending matter and sensation. The artist fashions a new skin to contain many performers, combined in erotic and languid poses. The suits enforce and support these poses, limiting movement while providing structure. Aesthetics of drag and fetish garments accentuate how constructed and/or desired organs are utilized to attract, repel, or become an other. From his practice new sculptural and painterly bodies emerge speaking a visual language of display, concealment, and touch.
VINCENT TILEY received his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2013 and his BFA from The Maryland Institute College of Art in 2010. Vincent Tiley currently lives and works in Brooklyn New York at Grace Exhibition Space. His work has been performed at Glasshouse ArtLifeLab (NYC), Defibrillator (Chicago), and Current Gallery (Baltimore). Vincent is also very active in New York City’s club culture and has made costumes for artists, nightlife personalities, drag queens, and musical artists.
