MacArthur “Genius” Award winning artist Kerry James Marshall presents IMAGE IS EVERYTHING in celebration of the Museum’s new acquisition of his painting, School of Beauty, School of Culture. Marshall is among the most eloquent of chroniclers of African American cultural life. Born in Birmingham in 1955, he lived here until his family moved to the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles in 1963.

An internationally-recognized artist fluent in most all two- and three-dimensional art forms, Marshall’s most esteemed works are his large-scale realist paintings that centrally place black figures and scenarios within this historically white Western art form. Marshall’s paintings bring to life a world of African American experience that he believes has been largely invisible to the larger culture.
