Valentina Zamfirescu repeats shapes according to games of chance, found data, and personal history. In Siblings, Zamfirescu (an only child), cuts life-size silhouettes of her own form at age three. These faceless figures are delivered and stacked until an ideal birth weight of 7.5 lbs is attained. Conceived and cut, these figures recall brothers and sisters that are at once lost and imagined.
Zamfirescu was born in 1984 in Craiova, Romania where she lived until she was 12 years old. She received her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2013. She exhibits work in Chicago where she currently lives and works. Zamfirescu is co-director of 4th Ward Project Space.
