Hair Braiders Summit is organized by Liliana Angulo Cortés with the Illinois Association of Hair Braiders and the United African Organization, as part of the exhibition “Unfurling: Five Explorations in Art, Activism, and Archiving” at the Gray Center for Arts and Inquiry.
The “Quieto Pelo / Mappy Hair” Project, the Illinois Association of Hair Braiders along with the United African Organization are organizing a cultural event on Braiding and Natural Hair Styling practices in African Descent communities in the Chicago area. In this event the braiders, the natural stylists, as well as people from the communities who know these traditions will have the opportunity to present them to the public. The braiders and hairdressers will share their ancient knowledge, their technical skills and also invent new styles. The purpose of the event is to share the knowledge with the community brought together as well as to celebrate the political achievement of the Special License for Braiders in the State of Illinois brought about through braiders getting organized.
