Happy Collaborationists present Back Matter, the epilogue to the School of the Art Institute’s 2013 Visual and Critical Studies Masters class.

VCS, a 2 year program, combines two cultural pursuits: criticism and visual arts, challenging the candidates to commit to research and criticism, as well as the creation and exhibition of their ideas.

To work both as a critic and an artist changes an individual’s perception of both these related, but often divided practices. When understanding is achieved through critical evaluation and creation, the processes affect one another- critical observations perpetuate constant dialogue between appraisal and practice. This exhibition presents the illustration of that narrative; the imprint that these artists and their actions have left, as well as hints at how this shared time may continue to influence their works.

Artists include:

Lise HALLER BAGGESEN
Joshua DEMAREE
Darja FILIPPOVA
Danny FLOYD
Chris FOTOPULOS
Sarah HAMILTON
Peter KUSEK
Ruslana LICHTZIER
Elçin MARASLI
Anthony D. STEPTER
Devdutt TRIVEDI
Michelle WEIDMAN

It may be impossible to divide the minute ways that the proximity to one another has altered their perspectives or the final product of this exhibition, but it is undeniably a testament to a process undertaken together. This is the end of a chapter, their summing up as a whole – an epilogue … BACK MATTER.

About VCS:
The Department of Visual and Critical Studies was founded in 2000 to provide a home for interdisciplinary study at SAIC. The Visual and Critical Studies program is not only concerned with the study of visual media across many different disciplines, but also the development of hybrid research practices, particularly the overlap between studio and scholarly production. The program is part of an evolving paradigm that addresses the complexity of visual and critical practices in the 21st century—it is designed for students who are committed to working, writing, and creating in an environment of interdisciplinary, trans-disciplinary, and post-disciplinary practices.
