Eliza Myrie: Ohh Manute

@ Applied Arts

845 W Washington Blvd, Chicago, IL 60607

Opening Friday, February 4th, from 6PM - 8PM

On view through Saturday, February 19th

Using the photo accompanying Manute Bol’s obituary as a point of departure Eliza Myrie manipulates the image across various mediums including video, sculpture and drawing. With Bol as an archetype, Myrie capitalizes on the reproducibility of his likeness as she outputs the image through a Xerox machine numerous times, flattening the basketball player into a stand-in, a material through which to investigate notions of scale, seriality, framing and recognition. While Bol’s defensive posture in the image—his lanky arms raised high above his 7-foot-7 frame—is rife with social associations, the repetition of the motif is not necessarily an attempt to create narrative. Rather, the improvisation between the material and the content of the imagery becomes a subject itself.
