Curatorial Statement: The exhibition aims to illuminate Glitch Art as a storytelling medium—a process through which each artist expresses themes and concepts important to them. One captivating aspect of Glitch Art is its plasticity and flexibility, as well as the way individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and various parts of the world, each with unique identities and interests, have all gravitated towards Glitch, glitching, and the expansive Glitch Art Communities. This forms a woven tapestry created by the intersections and subsets of Glitch—a patchwork, if you will, comprising a spectrum of ideas, people, and thoughts.

The concept of Patchwork Glitch delves even deeper when considering remix culture and how source material is deconstructed, used, and reused in much of Glitch Art. In a sense, Glitch Art becomes the voice of the collective—an internet-driven movement that begins to articulate a language through the rapid absorption of images online.

No artistic movement emerges in isolation; all art embodies what preceded it. Glitch Art is no exception, and its relevance in our contemporary world is undeniable. Glitch Art emerged in the 1970s, gained viral status around 2012-2014, with deep roots in Chicago and the birth of the Glitch Artist’s Collective on Facebook. Glitch Art then reentered the spotlight in 2021 within the Crypto Art realm where collectors recognized the inherent value of the artform.

The eight featured artists – jonCates, Sky Goodman, James Connolly, Gønz, Wrecks, Wicanhpi Iyotan Win Autumn Cavender, Sabato Visconti, and Empress Trash – each possess distinct origin stories detailing their journey to Glitch. Their works touch on themes such as fractured societies, queerness, immigration, spirituality, and more, all unified by the medium itself and the Glitch Art community. The exhibition ultimately portrays resilience through art.

“Patchwork Glitch” offers an opportunity to experience Glitch Art from a fresh perspective, deepening our understanding of its significance in modern art. This exhibition stands as a testament to the evolving nature of Glitch Art and its lasting impact on artistic expression.
