Gelitin: Democratic Sculpture 7

@ Neubauer Collegium

5701 S Woodlawn Ave, Chicago, IL 60637

Opening Saturday, September 23rd, at 5PM

On view through Friday, January 12th

On September 23 the Neubauer Collegium will host a reception to open Democratic Sculpture 7, an exhibition by the Viennese artist collective Gelitin presented as part of the fifth Chicago Architecture Biennial. Founded in 1993 by Ali Janka, Florian Reither, Tobias Urban, and Wolfgang Gantner, the quartet allegedly first met in 1978 “when they all attended a summer camp” – and they have been “playing and working together” ever since. Known internationally for their ambitious public art projects and transgressive performances, Gelitin are indefatigable partisans of the ludic impulse in art, forever honoring Friedrich Schiller’s claim that “man only plays when he is in the fullest sense of the word a human being, and he is only fully a human being when he plays.” For their exhibition at the Neubauer Collegium, Gelitin will activate a major new sculpture that will make a series of brief guest appearances at selected Chicago Architecture Biennial sites. Stay tuned – and stay hungry!
