LVL3 Proudly presents Modular Storage, a group show featuring Tao Lin, Bronson Smillie, Noël Morical.

Mariners used to measure their ship’s speed by tossing a rope in the water with knots tied at even intervals; the number of knots pulled off the stern during a given amount of time, based on a certain amount of sand flowing through an hourglass, were calculated as “knots per hour”. It is amusing that the system developed to quantify the speed of a ship also adopted the name of the unit that was used to measure it.

Invisible systems exist all around us- from infinitesimal organisms, to large-scale city traffic resembling that of flowing veins. Oftentimes, these systems, and the materials they are composed of, go unoticed and uncontested, even when we are active participants in them. Much can be gleaned from the deconstruction of everyday systems, one can take their pieces and reorient them into a cyborg that better suits contemporary needs. How much does a material or an action need to be reduced until we start to notice how it contributes to systems around us? Conversely, when does an object transition from being a material, to a function of a larger system? Materials can become irreducible and it helps us define the actions that we impose on them, our own hand in the processes that we make them undergo. The three artists in Modular Storage examine and meditate on the potential of the chance encounters that can be found within the systems around us.
