Opening Thursday, February 23rd, at 8PM
Berlin-based composer Julia Reidy makes music for processed and acoustic instruments—mostly guitars. Having drawn acclaim for solo performances on 12-string acoustic guitar that bridge microtonality, fingerpicking techniques, and classic minimalism, their recent work has utilized an increasingly broad sonic palette, fleshing out guitar-based composition with electronics, field recordings, and auto-tuned vocals. Records such as In Real Life (Black Truffle, 2019), Vanish (Editions Mego, 2020) and World in World (Black Truffle, 2022) showcase these elements in a series of non-traditional song forms as experimental as they are emotive, characterized by rhythmic elasticity, unstable harmonics (driven by Reidy’s unorthodox tuning experiments with just-intoned guitar), and a powerful sense of intimacy and atmosphere.
Join us in Bond Chapel for Reidy’s debut Chicago performance, co-presented with the Frequency Festival.
This concert is presented in partnership with the Frequency Festival and in cooperation with Goethe-Institut Chicago.
