Norman W. Long and Sara Zalek have been collaborating for over five years, most often spending time listening and walking in Chicago Parks, especially Big Marsh Park and Marian R. Byrnes Natural Area in the Calumet Region. They share interest and research into the practice of Deep Listening, as developed by Pauiine Oliveros. Her work, along with their continued exploration of intentional listening, contact mics, field recordings, sound walks, musicality in noise, synthesizers, and being present with one another cultivates their performance together.

Their Digital Album Steelworkers Drone produced by Reserve Matinee is available on Bandcamp. “This recording communicates a real dance of solidity and impermanence. Movement of water, wind, and birds making for foundation and foreground.”

Norman W. Long’s practice involves walking, listening, improvising, performing, recording and composing to create environments and situations in which he and the audience are engaged in dialogues about memory, place, ecology, culture, race, value, silence and the invisible. Norman Long has performed and exhibited at Experimental Sound Studio, Kavi Gupta Gallery, Links Hall, Elastic Arts,Green Line Performing Arts Center, Chicago Humanities Festival, Chicago Cultural Center and 2021 Chicago Architecture Biennial. Norman performed and toured with Angel Bat Dawid and the Brothahood, and has performed with Damon Locks, Peter Maunu, Carol Gennetti, Sara Zalek, Cristal Sabbagh, Dan Bitney, Ali/Harris/Long/McKenna group and Todd Carter. He has released his compositions on Hausu Mountain, Reserve Matinee and Room40 labels. Anemoi is the latest ensemble release with Ishmael Ali, William Harris and Wills McKenna. His latest solo release, BLACK BROWN GRAY GREEN was released in September 2021 on Hausu Mountain.

Sara Zalek is an interdisciplinary artist, Avant-garde maker of situations and curious objects. Rooted in physical investigations of trauma, resilience, and transformation, their work is intimate, raw, poetic. They create learning situations, workshops, and sensing environments to encourage thoughtful interpersonal connections. Through Butoh Curious / Butoh Chicago, Zalek connects national and international teaching artists with Chicago art makers across genres in the independent and fringe arenas (including dance, butoh, physical theater, experimental and improvisational music).

Zalek performs live often and in both live and online situations; they most recently took residence as a Curatorial Resident at Elastic Arts, were a 2015 Chicago Dancemakers Forum Lab Artist, a 2017 3Arts Make a Wave Awardee, and Ragdale Foundation Fellow. They have performed and curated performances at the Chicago Cultural Center, Elastic Arts, Experimental Sound Studio, Links Hall, Lumpen Radio, and so many more.
