Katherine Lampert: Pattern in Nature

@ Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum

2430 N Cannon Dr, Chicago, IL 60614

Opening Thursday, February 17th, from 10AM - 4PM

On view through Sunday, October 9th

Katherine Lampert’s solo exhibition Pattern in Nature will be on view for an extended run until October 9, 2022. The show, which includes seven original works, debuts for the first time at Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum second floor gallery. Katherine’s works isolate and repeat the minute pattern found on a single ammonite fossil specimen chosen from the Chicago Academy of Sciences on site collection. Using her background in bespoke pattern making, Katherine manipulates the specimen motif and unpacks the patterns from nature that reveal an aqueous origin story. Lampert aims to subvert the role of technology from these planes by tearing away and reintroducing natural randomness, her hand. Like waves across water or wind over fine sand dunes, Katherine physically scrubs areas from the motif away using an industrial rotating sheet palm sander. The resultant subtle, almost topographic, layers of creamy peach, bleached cotton white worn from crisp denim and indigo-black radiate timelessness. In all, one experiences the feeling of the unfolding, exhaling life from times past.

Effective 1/3/2022: Nature Museum open hours are Thursday-Monday, 10am-4pm. Proof of vaccination with valid ID is required for entry. Free on Thursdays through February 24th 2022. Paid tickets available online at all other times.
