Arshad Faruqui: Re-Thinking The Block

David Salkin Creative is pleased to present a selling exhibit of 30 unique silk scarves, produced in collaboration with Architect/Designer Arshad Faruqui in Karachi, Pakistan. Hand-dyed in both neutral and vibrant colorways and hand-printed with hand-carved wood blocks, Faruqui unites Salkin’s graphic patterns with traditional Pakistani scarf compositions and motifs. Artisans from KOEL Textiles in Karachi carved these unusual contemporary blocks and printed these vibrant, optical pieces through Faruqui’s innovative direction, integrating metallic inks and embroidery for added layers of depth and complexity.

Arshad Faruqui (B.Arch DCET Karachi, M.Arch IIT Chicago) has taught at the Indus Valley School of Art & Architecture since 1992 and established his Design House ‘Copper and Steel’ in 2006, where he practices Architecture, Interior Design and Landscape Design. He has been reviving the crafts of copper, working with local craftsmen to incorporate copper in tableware, fountains and furniture design. He is the Founder member of Pakistan Crafts Council and Pursukoon Karachi. Faruqui formed Black Olive publication with Photographer Amean J. and has edited and Published K’Architecture, 21 chairs, 8 and Interior Designs of Pakistan. He served as the Chairman Institute of Architects (IAP) Karachi Chapter and as Chairman Board of Architectural Education for the National Council of IAP. Faruqui has won the Design Excellence award and Fellowship from the Institute of Architects Pakistan. His Installation Crossing the Boarder is part of the National History Museum, Lahore, Pakistan. He has participated in several group and solo exhibitions and have also been curating shows all over Pakistan. He participated in both Karachi Biennale KB17 and KB19 and has been a guest speaker at Karachi Literature Festival and TEDX Lahore.

Exhibit Opens Saturday, November 6th and continues though December 18th. Open hours are generally Tuesday-Saturday 11am-6pm, by appointment.
