Don’t miss this signature lecture with internationally renowned architect Jeanne Gang, founding principal of Studio Gang. In more than 20 years of practice, she has challenged the presumed limitations on architects in order to create stunning places that enhance local identity, community and urban sustainability.

Bold themes that underpin Gang’s practice also help structure this talk. The rhythms of nature and climate, for instance, are expressed to exhilarating effect in Studio Gang’s structural forms. Glass, meanwhile, becomes a uniquely versatile material in the studio’s hands—offering far more than transparency to a project. Gang will detail the studio’s collaborative design approach and draw on several projects highlighted in the forthcoming monograph “Studio Gang: Architecture”—the firm’s first book in nearly 10 years—to illustrate how her practice consistently expands the possibilities for architecture to connect people to each other and to their environment. Featured projects range from the elegantly sculptural Bengt Sjostrom Starlight Theatre to New York’s striking Solar Carve office building and the soon-to-be-completed Vista Tower, Chicago’s third tallest. “Studio Gang: Architecture” will be available for purchase and there will be a signing with Gang immediately following the talk.

Jeanne Gang, FAIA, is the founding principal and partner of Studio Gang. Her inquisitive, forward-looking approach to design—unique in its pursuit of new technical and material possibilities as well as in its expansion of the active role of designers in society—has distinguished her as a leading architect of her generation. Drawing insight from ecological systems, she creates striking places that connect people with each other, their communities and the environment.

Gang is a Professor in Practice at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, her alma mater. She is the author of three books on architecture, and a monograph of the Studio’s work, “Studio Gang: Architecture,” will be published this spring. Her work has been exhibited widely, including at the Museum of Modern Art, the International Venice Architecture Biennale, and the Art Institute of Chicago. A MacArthur Fellow and an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Jeanne has been honored with the Cooper Hewitt National Design Award in Architecture and was named one of 2019’s most influential people in the world by TIME.
