Join Terry R. Myers in conversation with Elizabeth Smith, curator and executive director of the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation. Smith has curated and co-organized exhibitions on artists including Uta Barth, Lee Bontecou, Helen Frankenthaler, Margaret Honda, Jenny Holzer, Toba Khedoori, Kerry James Marshall, Donald Moffett, Catherine Opie, and Cindy Sherman, and on such architectural topics as the Los Angeles Case Study Houses and the work of R.M. Schindler. During this curatorial talk, participants gain an inside look into Smith’s history of projects, as well as her experience overseeing Frankenthaler’s foundation and legacy. After the talk, participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and comment on the discussion.

TERRY R. MYERS
Los Angeles-based writer and independent curator Terry R. Myers is an editor-at-large of the Brooklyn Rail. His most recent curatorial project was the survey exhibition, Candida Alvarez: Here, at the Chicago Cultural Center. Myers has held faculty positions at institutions including Art Center College of Design, Otis College of Art and Design, Pratt Institute, the Royal College of Art, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he was chair of painting and drawing.

ELIZABETH SMITH
Elizabeth Smith joined the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation as its first executive director in 2013. Previously, she held curatorial positions at Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. She is currently an adjunct professor at Bennington College. Smith has recently published writings on the work of artists Karla Black and Do Ho Suh; and an essay on Catherine Opie’s work is included in a monograph on the artist forthcoming from Phaidon.
