Take it from artist Lya Finston: One of the most exciting and gratifying experiences you can have is seeing your work come to life through motion! Watch your pictures jump off the page and onto the screen in this fun and easy animation workshop. We’ll mine the theme of “Domestic Interiors” for its magical potential and comedy gold, to illustrate clever, entertaining, and fantastical scenes taking place under quarantine. Love drawing? Sketch out a cartoon! Prefer taking pictures? Bring some objects together in a setting for a stop motion video!

Lya will give us a brief presentation on contemporary animation by artists like Susan Pitt and Lisa Armstrong, and then demystify how to quickly and easily create the content necessary for your very own animated GIFs, embracing the sometimes clunky and homemade aesthetics of this extremely accessible medium. By the end of the night you’ll be able to bring your audience into the life of your work like never before! No fancy software is needed, just a smartphone and some free apps (but Lya will also give a tutorial on doing this in Photoshop for anyone who wants it).

Suggested Materials
+ Smartphone
+ Paper and whatever you love to draw with
+ Ruler
+ Objects to photograph for stop motion videos
+ Phone tripod or makeshift phone holder, or a homemade viewfinder

Drink & Draw [Virtual] is a low-key drop-in social workshop devoted to staying creative from home. There are no pretensions and newcomers are always welcome, so invite your friends to join! Each Drink & Draw [Virtual] features a new guest artist and a new theme or project that uses pencil, paper, and everyday household supplies. Don’t have a sketchbook? Hosts will help you improvise. Find us on Zoom, a free app for your phone or computer. And of course: BYOB!

Love the experience? Pitch in to our Venmo Tip Jar (@spudnikpress) to directly support the featured artist and Spudnik Press Cooperative.
