Artmaking: Create Your Own Shoebox Diorama with Naomi Martinez

Create Your Own Shoebox Diorama with Naomi Martinez using everyday household and recycled items, decorate, furnish and create your own world within a shoebox diorama.

Suggested Supplies: Shoebox, Card stock or cereal box cardboard, Patterned paper, Drawing paper, Colored pencils, Pipe cleaners, Pom poms, Needle and thread (optional), Fabric scrap (optional), Glue, Scissors, Magazines, Black marker

Bio: Naomi Martinez grew up in the Logan Square neighborhood of Chicago. She has been creating her Monstrochika Art since 2000 through the mediums of traditional illustration, paintings, murals, doll making, and zines of her daily drawings.

Resident Artist Talk with Creative Wing Artist, Zakkiyyah Najeebah

Using files, links, images, and videos directly from my computer screen, Zakkiyyah Najeebah will be connecting threads between the research, writing, and visual influences that have helped guide her practice.

Bio: Zakkiyyah Najeebah is Chicago based visual artist and independent curator. Her work is most often initiated by personal and social histories related to family legacy, queerness, community making, intimacy, and Audre Lorde’s naming of “the erotic” Her practice borrows from visual traditions such as social portraiture, video assemblage, and vernacular found family sourced materials. Currently, her body of work prioritizes social relationships related to queerness, Black women’s identity formation, family, and the desire for connectedness. Zakkiyyah is also a Co-founder of CBIM (Concerned Black Image Makers): a collective driven project.

As an animation enthusiast, Graham seeks to give a platform of favorite animation films that will make you feel happy, make you think, and ultimately get you inspired and bring joy .

Drawing from Memory with Rodrigo Lara

Join teaching artist, Rodrigo Lara for a workshop where participants will explore drawing portraits from memory of a favorite person, place or thing you miss during these quarantined times.

Bio: In his work, Rodrigo creates memorials—fragmented and complex realities that formally break from their traditional constructions, and instead present assemblaged versions of themselves, which address our collective social and political thoughts, concerns, and hopes.
