Everything Must Go
Jeffrey Michael Austin

In response to the October 2018 urgent plea by the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) for “rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society,” Everything Must Go reimagines the gallery space and other predominant structures of culture and commerce in the image of a future society rooted in collaborative community, social justice and reverence of our shared natural environment. One of two concurrent Chicago solo exhibitions by Jeffrey Michael Austin, the show will feature plantable sculptural works yielding native wildflowers, available for takeaway at a cost determined by the visitor’s particular means and encouraged to be planted throughout the city in a gesture, both poetic and actual, of community-driven nourishment of the local ecosystem.

Everything Must Go will culminate in a public program on April 25th offering a platform for community discussion, a plant-propagation workshop by UIC Greenspace organizer June Ahn, and the harvesting of edible greens grown in the gallery throughout the course of the exhibition.

Opening Reception:
Friday April 10th, 6-10pm

Closing Reception and Plant-Propagation Workshop with June Ahn:
