In this Adult Education workshop, Tzedek Chicago’s Assistant Clergy Jay Stanton will show how the Book of Jonah can be read as a coming out narrative. Through sharing in a close read of the Book of Jonah, participants will gain an understanding of the figure of Jonah coming out as a prophet and coming to terms with his life’s purpose. What can looking at Jonah with queer perspectives teach us about coming out, self-acceptance, and the importance of engaging from the margins?

First delivered at the National Union of Jewish LGBTQQI Students (NUJLS) Conference at Penn in 2009, Jay has delivered this workshop in numerous settings for more than a decade, and, for the first time, is bringing it to our Tzedek community. No previous experience with Jewish texts or queer theory required.
