Come to an opening event on Saturday, February 15 from 6-9 p.m. at the Virgin Hotels Chicago Commons Club for Peter Walsh – KIMONO. Walsh’s seven kimono paintings will be on display at the hotel’s restaurant/bar from February 15-March 20, 2020.
Chicago artist Peter Walsh will display his “Seven Treasures” kimono painting series at the Virgin Hotels Chicago Commons Club through a collaboration with Rob McKay, co-owner of Hyde Park’s Connect Gallery. Connect Gallery’s curatorial partnership with Virgin Hotels Chicago introduces the work of noteworthy Chicago artists in the sophisticated setting of the hotel’s restaurant and bar, Commons Club – a “membership experience without dues” where “work & play intermingle.” Walsh’s paintings may be viewed from February 15 through March 20, 2020, with an opening event planned for Saturday, February 15, from 6-9 p.m.
Walsh was inspired to create the series of seven 5’ tall x 4’ wide paintings after viewing traditional Japanese fabric patterns in the recent Art Institute of Chicago Ukiyo-e art show. Some of the original designs are over 300 years old, but Walsh found them to be as bold, graphic, and arresting as if they were created today — an intriguing jumping-off point for his blend of abstract painting and hand-sewn canvas elements, creating his own modern versions of Japanese kimono. All of the paintings are available for sale.
Commons Club is located on the second floor of the Virgin Hotels Chicago, at 203 N. Wabash Avenue in downtown Chicago. The restaurant and bar offers daily breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with bar service until 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday, midnight on Friday/Saturday, and 10 p.m. on Sunday. Reservations are available through OpenTable or by calling 312.940.4788.
