Come meet and talk to artist Erin Cramer about her installation “Keys to the Kingdom”.

“My mom unexpectedly passed away recently and I’ve found my best source of comfort has been exploring forest preserves to walk among the trees. My family is close so this has been a terrible loss. I think about how her passing has changed the structure of our family forever. As fate would have it, I was reunited with my birth mother and birth father around the same time. So now I think a lot about family trees and how strange and wonderful it is to be an unconventional branch in THREE families.

I constructed these unusual and unexpected trees out of various family room sofa fabrics to represent family members, connection, and comfort. These trees are both solid and unpredictable. They are held together and still seem to be taking form. My hope for this installation is to convey comfort in the familiar and unfamiliar. The title is Keys to the Kingdom because that is what family means to me.”
