Zakkiyyah Najeebah presents new works and a glimpse into her thought process and practice for a solo exhibition “WE CANNOT BE COMPREHENDED EXCEPT BY OUR PERMISSION,” a prelude to her first solo exhibition, “A Different Kind of Love Story For Us,” presented at Adds Donna last year.

Her new exhibition at Blanc Gallery offers viewers the opportunity to explore themes of kinship, desire, and womanist histories through an archive of photography, mixed media, text, sound and performance.

Zakkiyyah Najeebah (b.1991) is a Chicago based visual artist , educator, and independent curator. Zakkiyyah uses photography, video, and mixed media to address the politics and aesthetic values of representation, inclusivity, black womanhood, queerness, family histories, and shared knowledge. Often her work takes place in the realm of portraiture, documentation, image-making, and educating. Currently, her body of work prioritizes social relationships related to queerness, Black women’s identity formation, chosen family, and the desire for connectedness
Zakkiyyah is also the Co-founder of CBIM (Concerned Black Image Makers): a collective driven project that prioritizes the experiences, concerns, and work of lens based artists of the Black diaspora.
