About the Artist:
Carina Yepez was born in Chicago and raised in Cicero, Illinois. She learned how to sew by observing her grandmother and then sitting with her mother as she sewed garments for her family. Carina has been a photographer since a young age and learned the quilting technique from the co-op of women Puntadas del Alma. Her body of photographs and quilted applique works explores her narrative and connections to being Mexicana-Americana. Using layers, patterns and stitches, her quilts tell the stories of the emotions surrounding the perspectives and history of her heritage. Since 2008 Las Puntadas del Alma the women of the community have been meeting to quilt personal stories of family and culture, an album of their lives.
About the Exhibit:
Exploring the idea of home through the immigrant experience of leaving one home and starting another. A visual narrative of home and what encompasses this idea of a structure (house), family, neighborhood, sites, food, etc. Thinking of uprooting and reflection of leaving something behind and starting a new concept of home.
