Sep 17th 2019

Join us for the presentation of a new Newberry collection donated by the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and featuring award-winning Spanish and Indigenous-language children’s books.

The collection represents some of the best literature of Mexico and Latin America and will serve as a reference for administrators, educators, and academics studying and promoting global literature in the United States.

Speakers at the presentation will address the importance of culturally relevant literature, consider the nature of “authentic” texts, and discuss how the UNAM collection allows diverse readers to see themselves through its narratives. Speakers will also discuss how the collection raises awareness of the ways the world is intellectually and culturally indebted to Mexican culture and Latin American literary traditions.

Speakers will include:

-Dr. Erika Erdely (UNAM Chicago)

-Dr. Gina Gamboa (Northeastern Illinois University)

-M. Ana Elsa Pérez Martínez (Coordinación de Difusión Cultural, National Autonomous University of Mexico)

-and Dr. Gema Ortega (Dominican University)

The event will open with a reception at 5 pm. The main discussion and presentation will begin at 6 pm.
