“Lessons for Chicago: Recent Findings on the Impacts of Historic Preservation”

Over the last 25 years there have been analyses of the impacts of historic preservation in more than half the states in the U.S. In recent years, however, the availability of “big data” and the ability to gather and analyze information and represent it graphically through GIS, has opened the opportunity to measure impacts at the local level.

While such an analysis has not yet been done in Chicago, there may be lessons from other cities on the positive contributions that a historic preservation strategy may provide. Donovan Rypkema, principal of PlaceEconomics and president of Heritage Strategies International, will share some of these findings, as well as two studies conducted for Landmarks Illinois in recent years.
