Khwezi Gule, director of the Johannesburg Art Gallery, discusses the legacy of the Medu Art Ensemble.

A collective of cultural workers formed in the late 1970s in South Africa and based in Botswana, the Medu Art Ensemble at its height comprised approximately 50 members working across artistic media, all united in their struggle against South Africa’s apartheid policy of racial discrimination. This program is presented in conjunction with the exhibition, “The People Shall Govern! Medu Art Ensemble and the Anti-Apartheid Poster,” which features posters made during the apartheid period that forcefully call for radical change, and reflect the complex social and political realities of that time.
