Dec 11th 2018

Here at Awakenings, we provide a sanctuary for survivors of sexual assault and their art. Packaged will be an arts workshop that will integrate the idea of self-exploration with creative art making and crafting. We invite those who have experienced sexual violence and their allies to come together in a safe environment, to think critically about what brings them comfort, and what brings them discomfort. Led by Adler University Graduate Art Therapy & Counseling students Abbie Brinker and Deanna DiGiulio, Packaged will give an outlet to survivors and their supporters to create a box or vessel that contains ideas, thoughts, or experiences that bring them some kind of joy or provide from discomfort. We encourage guests to bring their own box or vessel, but all other arts and craft materials including extra boxes will be provided to create these ideas and place them inside your box. Guests will also be welcome to bring any items they feel would fit well within their box. For those who make comfort boxes, Packaged will help turn hope and happiness into something tangible that can be kept and reexamined in times of discomfort. For those who make discomfort boxes, Packaged turns discomforts into something tangible that can be thrown away or destroyed.

Awakenings supports any kind of artistic expression in the direction of healing, as we increase survivors access to artistic services, foster an empathetic community, and challenge the perspective of those who need to be educated about the reality of sexual violence. By hosting creative workshops, we are inviting survivors and allies to express themselves in a safe and encouraging communal setting. An artistic background is not at all required, anyone of any skill set is welcome to participate. Our spacious studio has plenty of natural light with room to spread out and work peacefully. We hope to see you for a night of creation and healing on December 11th for Packaged!
