It seems impossible to communicate safely and securely online. Data hungry corporations and governments siphoning our internet traffic, collecting our searches, and mining our metadata. The same companies that build innovative tools for communication have declared privacy dead. But fear not! People like Harlo Holmes, Director of Newsroom Digital Security at Freedom of the Press Foundation, are working to educate folks how to be confident and effective in securing their communications. Harlo is a media scholar, software programmer, and activist; she contributes to the open source mobile security collective The Guardian Project; and is a founding member of Deep Lab, a collaborative group of cyberfeminists addressing issues such as privacy, surveillance, code and art. Join us as we get meta about data (and metadata) and discuss why privacy matters, even when folks say: “I’ve got nothing to hide.”

Doors open at 6:30 PM
Conversation begins at 7:00 PM
