Oct 20th 2018

Gather is pleased to announce Ayanah Moor and Udita Upadhyaya on Saturday, October 20th at 7pm at the Comfort Station Logan Square.

As a kid, Ayanah Moor could be found hand drumming beats on elementary school desks and scratching 45’s on her beige Fischer Price turntable. Her claim to fame is the 7th grade band class in which she befriended Missy Elliot. Later they collaboratively performed in a school talent show with Missy rhyming over Ayanah’s beat boxing. After some djing in the early-aughts, these days she most often spins vinyl for friends at home dinner parties with her wife and fellow artist, Jamila Raegan. Ayanah Moor works across various media to create paintings, prints, drawings and performance where notions of blackness and gender identity take shape. She is an Associate Professor in the Department of Printmedia at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and has exhibited at DePaul Art Museum, Chicago; The Studio Museum in Harlem, NY; The Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh; Adobe Books, San Francisco; ONE National Gay and Lesbian Archives—University of Southern California Libraries; Subliminal Projects, Echo Park, CA, Te Tuhi Centre for the Arts, New Zealand; and Proyecto ‘ace, Buenos Aires, among others. Ayanah Moor completed her BFA at Virginia Commonwealth University and MFA at Tyler School of Art.

Udita Upadhyaya is an interdisciplinary artist who uses her body and the details of her medical, cultural, and social biography as her primary art material. Her work spans live art, devised theatre, performative photographs, sculpture, installation, video, writing, text, and fiber arts. Upadhyaya’s interdisciplinary education and subsequent professional practice across filmmaking, international relations, and market research informs her research and community based approach to creative practice.
In her sound based work, Upadhyaya delves into the privilege of being able to lose a language, to have a language to spare. She wonders which bodies have access to literacy? Which to expression? When? And Where?

Most recently, Upadhyaya has performed and exhibited work at the, Villa Teresa Decorative Arts Museum, Links Hall, Weinberg/Newton Gallery, Defibrillator Gallery at Zhou B, and a solo show, nevernotmusic, at Roman Susan Gallery, Chicago. Upadhyaya lives and works between Chicago and Mumbai. http://www.uditaupadhyaya.com/

Gather is an experimental music series bringing musicians from different scenes, backgrounds, practices, disciplines, and communities together for connection and artistic exchange. We curate this series with our attention toward introducing musicians who may not otherwise cross paths and whose works dialogue in compelling ways. By doing so, we hope to leave potential for collaboration and familiarity amongst different experimental music forms in Chicago. Gather is curated by Allen Moore, Nick Meryhew, and Rebecca Himelstein
