Gather is pleased to announce Anna Orlikowska and Sam Scranton on Saturday, August 18th at 7pm at the Comfort Station Logan Square.

Anna Orlikowska is a Warsaw-born visual artist working between Amsterdam and United States. She received an MFA degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2016) and a BFA degree from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam (2013). She has been awarded with prizes and scholarships and has been showing her work internationally. In 2017 she was an artist-in-residence at Residency Unlimited in Brooklyn, New York and at LES Studio Program in New York City. Her practice involves a variety of media ranging from installation, performance, sculpture, video, drawing, text and sound, especially voice. Orlikowska investigates the physicality of sound and its site-specific relations to architecture, its impact on the body and the imagination of the listener.

Sam Scranton is a composer/performer working at the intersection of music, performance art, and installation. He has been described in New Music Box as “an artist taking wholehearted risks” and in the New York Times as a “killer drummer”.

Recent projects include: High Quality Final Days, an album of speech-generated compositions released on Parlour Tapes+; We Are Predatory, Air-Breathing, for alto sax, accordion, percussion, MIDI playback and TTS voice, commissioned by Gyre Ensemble; HOLOLITH, a durational work of speculative music, commissioned by Mocrep; and HOLOTYPE, premiered by Spektral Quartet.

Sam has presented nationally and internationally at festivals and conferences such as Composit Festival, NUNC!, New Music Gathering, the International Conference on Music and Minimalism, and Omaha Under the Radar. As part of the band volcano!, Sam has performed onstage in Berlin, Moscow, London, and Paris, with albums released by Leaf Label (UK).

Currently, Sam lives and works in Chicago, pursuing a doctorate in composition at Northwestern University.

Gather is an experimental music series bringing musicians from different scenes, backgrounds, practices, disciplines, and communities together for connection and artistic exchange. We curate this series with our attention toward introducing musicians who may not otherwise cross paths and whose works dialogue in compelling ways. By doing so, we hope to leave potential for collaboration and familiarity amongst different experimental music forms in Chicago. Gather is curated by Allen Moore, Nick Meryhew, and Rebecca Himelstein
