Experiencing Color is a public discussion with LATITUDE’s August Artist in Residence Luftwerk and Dr. Michael Rossi on the perception and psychology of color. Artist and LATITUDE Technical Director Alex Wieder will join Luftwerk and Rossi as a moderator. During this event, Luftwerk will present ‘Degrees of Lightness’, an ongoing project produced during their residency. Following this presentation, Luftwerk will launch into a conversation with Wieder and Rossi exploring the phenomena of color.
About Luftwerk:
Luftwerk explores light, color, and perception in immersive, experience-based installations. Focused on the context of a site for each project, Luftwerk applies their own interpretive layer, integrating the physical structure, historical context, and embedded information into each piece. Since founding in 2007, Luftwerk has amassed a significant body of work ranging from site-specific installations to experimental projects that interpret data. In each project they are interested in the abilities of how light and color can be utilized to shift perception and enhance experience.
About Dr. Michael Rossi:
Michael Rossi is a historian of science and medicine specializing in the history of perception. His work focuses on how moral and aesthetic values – such as questions of beauty, pleasure, pain, righteousness, honesty, etc. – become scientific and medical questions. His most recent book – The Republic of Color – looks at how scientific theories of color shaped matters of politics, ideology, and society in the United States over the past hundred and fifty years.
About Alex Wieder:
Alex Wieder is the Technical Director at LATITUDE Chicago as well as a practicing lens-based artist. His practice has focused around iterative explorations of the physicality of light, and more recently, the relationship between perceived memory and the inherent fallacies of technologies involved in the act of its preservation.
