Jul 18th 2018

On July 18, we open up our Girl/Friends Leadership Institute private viewing of SOARS to public at the SAIC Maclean Ballroom, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). Twenty years ago, social documentary photographer Scheherazade Tillet asked her older sister and writer, Salamishah, if she could document Salamishah’s recovery from being raped, not just once, but twice in college. In turn, Salamishah opened a window onto her sites of trauma and her newfound safe spaces. While grappling with her sexuality, eating disorders, and the reclaiming of her spirituality and body, she and her sister found healing pathways for herself and others.

Together, the Tillet sisters created the award-winning multimedia performance “Story Of A Rape Survivor” (SOARS), which features a diverse cast of actresses, dancers, and singers who have toured the show to over five hundred college campuses and communities. SOARS was an early trailblazer for our current movement in its elevation of the voices of rape survivors, its education of the public about the epidemic of sexual violence, and its in-depth focus on healing and recovery in the aftermath of trauma.

This Chicago performance will feature Nigerian singer Ugochi, alumni of Girl/friends Montana Ross, and actress Patrese McLain.

There will be a Q&A with the cast of SOARS after the performance.

Door open at 2:00pm
