During this talk, Pouya Ahmadi will be sharing his journey through editing and design process of his most recent project, Amalgam journal. Amalgam is an independent transdisciplinary journal that explores the intersection of typography, language, and the visual arts.

Amalgam Op.I brings together a selection of writings, transcribed performances, and interviews with a diverse group of designers, linguists, and visual artists including: Alexandru Balgiu, Philip Burton, Dinamo (Johannes Breyer & Fabian Harb), Meghan Ferrill, Devin King, Alice J. Lee, Gerry Leonidas, Paul McNeil, Peter O’leary, Rouzbeh Rashidi, David Jonathan Ross, and Gregory Vines. The highlights from this issue include: Paul McNeil’s note on the evolution of typography, text, and language; Typographische Monatsblätter cover design process by Gregory Vines; an extended interview with Dinamo discussing the thought process behind their work; and Norfolk typeface original drawings by Philip Burton and Armin Hofmann. The first issue of the journal is available on www.amalgam.online.

Pouya Ahmadi is a Chicago-based designer and educator. He is the editor of Amalgam journal, Assistant Professor of Graphic Design at University of Illinois at Chicago, and editorial board member of Neshan magazine. Pouya’s work has been featured in Moscow International Design Biennial, Dubai Design Week, It’s Nice That, AIGA Eye on Design, Etapes, Grafik, Type Directors Club, Print Magazine, and many others.​

ChiDM Presents explores themes within our current exhibition—Great Ideas of Humanity: Out of the Container. This series is free and open to the public, and held at the Chicago Design Museum, at 108 N. State St., on the 3rd floor.
