Bert Green Fine Art is pleased to present our first solo show of Los Angeles-based painter Nicole Etienne, guest curated by Alix Sloan of Sloan Fine Art in Los Angeles; and our seventh solo show by San Francisco-based painter Sandra Yagi.

Nicole Etienne’s paintings are amalgams of paint and photography. She covers images printed on canvas with painted layers of luscious viscosity, leaving visible parts of the photographic image to facilitate a poetic conversation between the two media. These works ooze sensuality and emotional resonance yet remain fully grounded in the present moment.

Sandra Yagi is interested in the intersection between science and art, using themes of anatomy, genetic manipulation, evolution, and medical oddities as tools in the creation of intricate, small and medium scale paintings in traditional styles. These works depict strange worlds where flesh is malleable, skeletons of conjoined twins play, flayed simians invade the historical canons of Western art, and small, delicate, genetically hybrid creatures satisfy unusual curiosities and symbolize moral conundrums.

Alix Sloan opened Sloan Fine Art in New York City in 2008 and now operates as a nomadic pop up gallery doing collaborative exhibitions across the USA. Longtime colleagues and friends, Alix Sloan and Bert Green are pleased to bring Nicole Etienne’s work to Chicago for the first time.
