Coping with Violence: Manifestos and Metamorphosis
A Talk by Beatriz Guzmán Velásquez

In the changing landscape of Latin America, artists’ books and zines offer a site for direct creative expression. MFA Painting and Drawing candidate Beatriz Guzmán Velásquez will discuss the aesthetics of manifestos and metamorphoses that unite selected new acquisitions of Joan Flasch Artists’ Book Collection, giving a glimpse into how artists react to the violence their homeland endures. Guzmán Velásquez interprets these works through her background in border studies, postcolonial theory, and her own visual investigation of trauma, coping mechanisms, and cultural understandings of death.

Following a 30 minute talk, the audience will be welcome to peruse the works and ask questions.

Cover image is taken from the comic “Mazacote” by Artúur in the anthology Mazacómic, one of the works to be discussed in the presentation.
